Pandemonium in the hall

On Thursday 13th September, a musical percussion group called Pandemonium visited Ilam School.  We were treated to a 'round-the-world' trip hearing music from the Cook Islands, Africa, South America and more.  We got to join in one of the Samba songs.  Listen here:

Here is a clip of Lydia playing the drums with one of the group members.

The performance finished with the Bongo Song, which many of the children know, so they got up and danced.   Unfortunately I didn't get a clip of Room 19 enjoying it.

Sky full of colours

The most amazing colours were in the sky outside Room 19 last night.  The camera couldn't even capture what it was like to see, but it gives you an idea of the beautiful sunset.

A few minutes after I took these photos, this happened:

Then:

The ground was rumbling beneath my feet and I almost dived under the pile of cushions on the couch!  IT WAS LOUD!

Fizzing and Foaming - Experiment 1

Today we started off a science unit called Fizzing and Foaming, learning about chemical reactions.  We made sherbet using the following recipe and process:

We learnt when a carbonate, in this case the baking soda, and an acid, the citric and tartaric acids, are mixed together with moisture present, it creates CO2 (carbon dioxide) which are the gas bubbles fizzing on our tongues.  What a tasty way to learn!

Call Me Maybe? or Share It Maybe?

So you've heard of the song 'Call Me Maybe' by Carlee Ray Jensen,

Hey I just met you
And this is crazy
But here's my number
So call me maybe?

but have you heard Cookie Monster's version?

Hey me just met you
And this is crazy
But you got cookie
So share it maybe?

Can you makeup your own chorus?

Here's mine:

Hey I just met you
And this is crazy
Holidays you are gone
So come back maybe?

What two sports would you combine?

The Northern Mystics have crossed the line by trying a 'line out' style jump during their most recent game against the Melbourne Vixens, much to the crowd's disgust.  Have a look here:
 Netball Line Out
If you could add a feature of another sport to one you currently play, what would you do?

  • Lydia would pick up the ball and throw it into the goal in hockey.
  • Rylie would like to be able to run with the ball in netball.
  • Anna would like to be able to jump and shoot (dunk) the ball in netball.
  • Ben would like to be able to tackle people in judo.
  • Zak would mix basketball and soccer so you could run with the ball in soccer.
  • Leah wants to be able to ride a horse while playing hockey.
  • Eileen wanted to mix soccer and hockey to hit the ball with a hockey stick.
  • Sarah wants to combine horse riding and basketball so you can bounce the ball while on a horse.
  • Alison would mix netball and soccer so you could hold the ball in soccer.
  • Keito would make it so there are conversions in soccer.
  • Jonty would combine archery and horse riding so it’s more of a challenge to shoot and aim.
  • Rylie would like to combine horse riding and netball so that you can jump over your defender.
  • Eres would combine pole-vaulting and basketball so you could pole-vault into the basketball hoop.
  • Nathan would like to combine food eating contests and rugby so you could tackle your opponent in food-eating contests.
  • Thomas would combine fencing and archery so there  was one opponent of each, but with fake arrows.

Consumer pyramid

Look at this consumer pyramid:

Why do you think there are more organisms at the bottom of the food pyramid than the top?
What happens if the population of the top level increases?
What happens if a new species is introduced that eats grasshoppers?
